Haverhill Running Club Kevin Henry Race 2 - Thursday 4 July 2013
So, after the first race of the season we are top of the league ...... and we want to stay there. So a call to arms to don your blue and white vest and come to Kedington for a speedy evening 5k. The course does have a bit of an incline in the first mile (not a problem for those I saw training on Tuesday!) followed by a pretty speedy next 2 miles - it's a corker. Apart form a lap around the playing field to start it is all road, so racing flats should be fine. Remember, everyone scores and it would be fantastic to see the same turnout as at Saffron Walden. The race starts at 7:30pm, and is probably about a 30 minute drive from Cambridge. If anyone needs or can offer lifts please post in the comments, or shout at Thursday or Tuesday training; those that don't drive will be really grateful. Also if you are injured and can't run, I would really appreciate some help with the scoring, or even just come down to support! - please email me on chris@hirky.wanadoo.co.uk. The race directions are on a link at the bottom this report. See you there!

An update - some of you have offered to car share. If you need a lift, or have offered, please meet at the track at 6pm to leave at 6.15. Many thanks for the help guys

club night tonight
June is a mellow and convivial month, and it has a 4th Tuesday, hence we have another club night tonight in the clubhouse at Wilberforce Rd. Short notice mayhap, but do try to drop in for a wind-down after training; hot, cold, soft and hard drinks available.

VLM 2014 GFA
Good For Age entries are open, and the deadline is 8th July. Entry is online only, and so scanned documents and/or URLs will be needed for proof of age and result.

North Downs Run
It was my fifth attempt at the North Downs Run, a rather savage, hilly, mostly off-road 30K near Gravesend, but it was Carmel's first, so I can only applaud debut girl's 2:51 to take the house record - what a superb long-distance season she's having. My blow-up was a good bit better than my other three blow-ups there, so hey ho. Beautiful race, particularly for masochists.

Shrewsbury Marathon
I tried so hard to kid myself that the inaugural Shrewsbury marathon route could really be flat ... that they didn't just miss a tick box on the RunnersWorld profile ... that they had sympathy for visiting flatlanders ... that a VLM Good For Age ticket may be possible ... I knew in my heart it couldn't be true. I quite like lapped courses but this one, knowing that three more sets of those verticals (in Cantabrigian-speak) were coming atcha was tough but I guess it did bring out the fight in me. And despite there being a few teething problems in the organisation, I'm impressed by how they got the whole town on board with road closures, support and music etc and I reckon next year's will be a cracker worth going to. They have a Half as well. And I literally sobbed my way over the finish line in a time I'm amazed at 3:45:09 (chip) so all good.

Marathon de la Liberte
Just back from a little jog up the coast in Caen. The weather and wine were both perfect and I can highly recommend the Marathon de la Liberte. It was very well organized and a friendly event with 5K, 10K and half-marathon races occurring throughout the weekend. The 5K had around 60,000 entrants, so the place was buzzing. Definitely one to consider for next year and despite the hills at the end it is a reasonably fast course.

Swaledale marathon
Some fantastic results from the Swaledale marathon. It's not a full marathon - just under 24 miles but it climbs 5,000 feet and is a proper fell race with proper fell runners in it. The C&C men's team was fourth and the women's team second, beating several men's teams. Katie S was second lady and John O second V50. Lots of great times and outstanding performances. See results here. Unfortunately I couldn't run - injured foot - so you won't find me in the results but it was a beautiful day and good for watching. Well done everyone.

Cambridge parkrun 08/06/2013
Unfortunately, due to a technical error, there have been some incorrect results published for Saturday's run. I'm collating emails and trying to sort this out so we can republish the results in the next few days. Please bear with us on this - it's a bit of a headache so far! If your time and finish position looks wildly out of place, please email us @ cambridgeoffice@parkrun.com and we will endeavour to correct it. We'll need your name, parkrun ID, finish time and finish position (if you know them). And no cheating! We are acting in good faith.

Even Stevens - Peterborough 5K Grand Prix Series
Tom Stevens raced away to victory in his first appearance in the blue and white hoops at Ferry Meadows on weds night. As always it was a fast course with a quality field but Tom pulled away on the final lap to record 16.03 and take first place, great work Tom. Hot on his heels were on a contingent of busway bashers, me in 10th and a new PB of 16.48 (and first V40), coach Ferguson also a new PB of 17.12, strong runs from Iain Wood 17.21, Neil Carrington 17.43 and Graeme Kennedy 17.46. Dave Barber close to his best in 18.08. Usual 5k series runners Carmel and Andy ran 21.55 and 21.17 respectively (Any PB's there guys?). Next race in two weeks...

Successful start to the season at Saffron!
54 magnificent C&C'ers turned up to Newport to run the first 5k Kevin Henry race of the series. We were met by beautiful blue skies and rumours of a bobbly, rolling course, with a couple of sharp inclines. We discovered a ...... bobbly course, sharp turns, dodging pot holes, avoiding a particularly well postioned ditch on the penultimate turn and yes, a couple of demanding inclines - especially the last one at 4k! This only fuelled what was a tremendous performance with wins for Sullivan and Mel, in fantastic times of 16:36 and 19:55 respectively. Claire Somerton claimed second lady with Katie and Helen picking up 7th and 11th for a great ladies score. Duncan (3rd), Tom (5th), Richard Park (8th), John (10th) and Matt (12th) all scored well for the men. Even more impressive was due to such a great turn out of men and ladies - remember everyone scores - the men's final score was 3 and the ladies 4, for a combined score of 7 and maximum combined points of 12 to put us top of the league! Once these are posted on the Saffron website, I'll include the link. It just remains to say thank you to everyone who supported the club on Thursday - it was great to see so many new faces and an absolute sea of Blue and White. Long may it continue. See you in Kedington for the Haverhill leg in July!

St Neots Riverside Half Marathon 2013
It's on 17 November this year and the entries are open now. It sold out in about three days last year. First C&C on the list year? Step up and take a bow, Mr Hurcomb. Just ahead of Rob Conquest and Dan Bayles. That's dedication for you.

Summer Cambridge Fetch Mile
Some very fast miles and quite fast cake were had at the Fetch Summer Mile on Saturday. Jonathan Escalante-Phillips (4:41) took gold with Jack Bowden (4:48) & Iain Wood (4:56) taking the allegorical silver and bronze. There were a stonking sub five-and-a-half from David Barber (5:27) and speedy sub-sixes from Christof Schwiening (5:43) & Chris Poole (5:52). Kristoffer Sempler ran himself a perfectly round 6:00 PB. Ever fast first and second women were Stacy Wheat (6:10) & Clare Garvey (6:33) respectively. See the full results for all times: Everyone was well below 8:40 which is a great achievement. The huddles of results around certain times show the oomph gleaned from a little friendly heat competition and certainly for some of us it's just refreshing to rediscover what running fast races feels like (and that we can). The distances run were 1 mi, 800 m, 400 m, 200 m & 100 m. We can add in our own times for the latter if we like or mark up any PBs and there's a gallery to add your photos. Thanks to Chris Hurcomb, Richard Lyle, Fetch volunteers, timers, the pacers who remained dedicated to their role till the very end :), awesome cake makers, bringers of cake, cake slicers and friends/families big & small.
