Abingdon Marathon
Sunday 20th October 2013
JonA
Lured again by the promise of a “flat and fast course with pb potential”, this was the third time for me at Abingdon. The weather conditions weren’t great, it had been raining steadily overnight and although the rain miraculously stopped about 15 minutes before the start, significantly heavier rain was forecast for later.
I was hoping for a GFA time which in my case is sub 3.15 and was feeling reasonably confident as the training had gone pretty well.
Determined not to go off like a dog on a rocket, I set off at a steady pace. The first 10 miles were spot on and went through halfway in just over 1.33. During the second lap I started to slow as the forecast rain duly arrived and the gusting wind started to take its toll especially on the more exposed parts of the course.
A combination of a couple of enforced toilet breaks at miles 18/19 and a shocking final three miles meant I missed my target time finishing in 3:15:43. Oh well, better luck next time I guess.
If anyone’s looking for that “flat and fast marathon course with pb potential”, then Abingdon is worth considering. It’s fairly low-key and the marshalling and crowd support is good. It does fill up very quickly so you can’t afford to hang around when entries open in February.
