Warsaw Marathon
Sunday 29th September 2013
BethJ
A major city marathon and the multi-day buzz surrounding one is a new experience for me so the Warsaw Marathon (starting and finishing in the National Stadium) was really quite exciting. The bursts of full crowd support and cacophony which appeared while running around the city was really helpful and when I was in the depths of self pity because surprise, surprise I'd started fast (those pacers know nothing of course!) a line of what seemed like fifty grinning school children appeared each yelling at me to take their cup of water and it yanked me back into reality: It always gets better again ... well, often enough anyway. In the end I felt quite strong for the final 5 miles even though my pace had dwindled a bit and my splits were not that bad meaning I bagged a big PB of 3:18:30. The finisher’s medal was truly massive and on the whole the roads were closed. The race was immaculately organised and it was properly flat apart from when popping in and out of road tunnels and the like.
