City of Norwich Half Marathon
Sunday 24th November 2013
PaulB
Today was the second half marathon of November. Following on from a PB at St Neots, I headed to Norwich to try and pace a friend to under 2 hours in her first half marathon. The course is two laps from the Norfolk Showground and is gently undulating (actually pretty flat but I am an adopted Fenlander).
The start was tricky as there were over 2000 runners battling for position on the narrow roads in the show ground but once we got out onto the main roads after about a mile, everything settled down and we were able to get into a comfortable rhythm. Roads were basically closed to traffic, except for local access and support was excellent - especially the 4 houses on one of the closed roads where all the inhabitants were out with glasses of red at about 11 am to watch the race go past!
There was a slightly annoying wiggle to get up to the 13.1 miles but this was inserted in the middle between the two laps, so wasn't too bad. A really nice touch was the start and finish being the same spot. In spite of the cold weather the race was well supported and the marshals were excellent, both on the course and at the water stations. Its one I would think about doing again and could make a good option as a fallback if people fail to secure a place in the ever popular Riverside Half.
