CUH&H Roman Road Run
Saturday 16th March 2013
Chris Hurcomb

4 intrepid C & C'ers turned up at Wilberforce Road to be driven by coach over to the start of The Roman Road Race at Horseheath. 3 (not me!) had already had a blast at the parkrun earlier, so were well and truly warmed up, or already tired. The race is a handicap, so we all put down 0, which meant the fastest guys would start 30 minutes behind us, with others starting 10 and 20 minutes behind. 2 years ago Alex Downie wrote a report on this run which has brilliantly summed up the atmosphere and good fun to be had, including 13 climbs. The difference this year is that it was an absolute mudfest for the first 3 miles, then where the paths had been dug up it was like running across a ploughed field, then for the last 4 miles it was much better, in comparison that is, with just slippy and slidy trails. The one good thing was that the blustery wind was not in our faces, probably slightly oblique, maybe slightly helpful. A run that certainly kept a smile on your face. We all said we were going to take it as a tempo run, but I think the competitive edge got to me as I did manage to chase down 1 Hare and Hound! Paula had a cracking run, pushing me to the finish, and Ian decided that it was not hard enough so ran an extra 1/3rd of a mile! A great time for Diane as well, ahead of 3 seasoned competitors. I did get chicked by a 10 minute lady, who flew past me in the last 1/2 mile, and a great comment from Ian, when an ultra speedy 30 minute Hare and Hound passed him near the end - unbelievable pace!

I would really recommend this and hopefully see more C&C'ers next year.
