Burnham Beeches Half Marathon
Sunday 21st August 2011
Julian H

I was the only C&C runner in this splendid race through these ancient beech woods only a few miles from Slough. It is a two lap course on metalled tracks or roads throughout. There was shade from the sun and some shelter from a bit of drizzle with lovely scenery all around. The start and finish of the race are at Caldicott School: this boosted my morale when I remembered that it was the scene of my highest ever competitive cricket score (4 not out since you ask, in 1977). The school is close to Stoke Poges where Thomas Gray wrote 'Elegy in a country churchyard.' Like the ploughboy in that classic poem, after two hard laps I 'weary trudged my homeward way' up a couple of hills over the last two miles. A shout of encouragement from a friend who had finished before me, somehow dragged a sprint finish out of me for a chip time of 1:40:20 - not far from my PB.
Though BB is the other side of London it only took me 90 minutes drive to get there on a quiet Sunday morning and I commend the event to others looking for a competitive Half Marathon at the end of the summer.
